The Difference Between Electrical wire and Electrical Cable

April 10, 2020

Electrical Wire and Electrical cable are generally composed of three parts: conductor, insulation layer and the sheath layer. Electrical Wire generally refers to the type of wire and cable formed by standing single or multiple conductors such as copper or aluminum and then adding an insulating layer or sheath layer to the conductor of the wire and cable. A cable is generally composed of one or more conductors, and each conductor of a cable is stranded by one or more conductors, which are formed by an outer insulation or sheath. To put it simply, each conductor of a cable can be considered as a wire. This is the most straightforward difference between wires and cables.

According to the bodily form of conductors, wires can be divided into solid conductors, stranded conductors, braided conductors and so on. According to whether the wire and cable have an insulating layer, it can be divided into the bare wire and insulated wire. Bare wires are wires that do not have insulating layer or protective cover outside the conductor. A cable, on the other hand, can be seen as a large wire with one or more independent insulated wires that make up a conductor core and a protective layer. The number of conductor cores of epilepsy is generally less, at the same time, the diameter of the wire conductor is also relatively small, the structure is relatively simple. On the other hand, the conductor core of the cable is more, the diameter is larger, and the structure is more complex. For example, some cables with steel tape, some cables with a braided layer, and so on.

Electrical Wires, generally used for daily household use, such as wiring, leads, etc., are also used for home appliance production, motor parts connection, power supply equipment connection, etc., for the transmission of low-power power and signal light. Cable, which is generally used to transmit, distribute and transmit strong electric energy or signal in the power supply line, passes through large current (tens of amperes to thousands of amperes) and high voltage (220v to 35kv and above). Depending on the purpose, the cable is generally divided into the power cable, shielded cable, control cable and so on.

To sum up, in general, we define wires and cables as wires with a single conductor and cables with multiple conductors. Conductors with small diameters are called Electrical wires, and conductors with larger diameters are called Electrical cables. A simple wire or cable with a complex structure.
